Bow Shopping Info

If you've been blessed with a little girl in your life, then you'll soon find a whole subculture of hairbow shoppers and suppliers out there!  Hairbows are the #1 accessory for little girls - nothing makes them look more girlie than a bow on top of their cute little heads.  It can be intimidating when you're first starting to shop.  So many choices!  What size is best?  What's a French clip?  No slip grip?  Organza, satin, grosgrain - oh my!  Relax... we're here to help!

Hairbow buying should be FUN, never stressful.  Any bow you select will look cute with some outfit sometime, so don't worry about it.  If necessary, choose the bows you like, then shop for outfits to match (who says it has to be the other way around?).  So let's answer some common questions about hairbow shopping.

What size of hairbow is best?

Your first decision should be the size of bow for your little girl.  This is always a matter of preference, since some moms prefer the largest of bows on the smallest of babies.  A general guideline is this:

Our Small Bows are 1.75" wide and made with 3/8" ribbon. They are great for all ages and the best size if you're not sure where to start.  They look good alone, pulling back wisps of hair or bangs that are growing out, and as accents for tweens and teens.  They look good in pigtails too.  Small Bows are available on alligator clips (see below for hardware info).

Our Medium Bows are 3" wide and made with 7/8" ribbon.  The most common bow size that you will find; suitable for all ages, but less popular than the small bow with tweens and teens.  These are perfect for pigtails.  Medium Bows are available on alligator clips or french clips.

Our Large Bows are 4" wide and made with 1.5" ribbon. An excellent size for babies and toddlers if you prefer a bigger bow.  This bow is usually considered too big for older girls.  Large Bows are available on alligator clips or french clips.

Our Extra Large Bows are 5" wide and made with 2.25" ribbon. This is the ultimate big bow.  It looks great on toddlers, but is usually considered too big for older girls.  Try at least one of these bows for your little girl - you might be surprised by how much you like it!  Extra Large Bows are available on alligator clips or french clips.

Our Metro Clips are 1.75" covered alligator clips and come in pairs or sets of four.  These are great for all ages including moms!  Metro Clips are lightweight and stay in place all day.  They are great for holding back wisps of hair, bangs that are growing out, or to just provide a touch of whimsy to the hair for tweens, teens, moms, as well as babies, toddlers, and little girls of all ages.

Our Cutie Clippies are just like Metro Clips in functionality, but the cute designs are more suited for babies and toddlers.  These are great pigtail accents.

Our Ponytail Streamers are great for girls of all ages who have long hair that they like to pull back in a ponytail.  They come on 1.5" french clips to place above the ponytail rubber band, or on a black metal-free Pony O rubber band.  They hang 10" from the center knot and provide a much more fashionable touch to ponytails than a simple ribbon tied in the hair.

What's the difference in all the ribbon choices?

Grosgrain ribbon is a basic woven ribbon that comes in lots of color choices and is a great everyday ribbon.  It's the most common ribbon that you will find.

Dancer Organza is sheer in the middle and edged with satin.  It's a very pretty ribbon that lives up to its name.  Dancer is perfect for dressy occasions such as recitals, Easter or weddings.

Satin is thick and heavier than organza, and is shiny but not sparkly.  It looks great for formal occasions.

What color choices are popular?

All little girls need the basic solid colors to match their wardrobe, so we recommend our Gift Sets in brights and pastels.  With these, you will never be without a bow to match any outfit.  You might choose one set in small and one set in medium.  Add a few printed bows to match her special outfits, and you'll have a fine collection of bows!

What about little girls who have some hair, but not enough for a clip to stay in?

If she has enough hair to pull into a tiny ponytail to the side, use a small clear rubber band (you can find them at beauty supply stores) to hold this pinch of hair in place, then clip a bow right over the rubber band to cover it.  These rubber bands are inexpensive, so don't try to pull one out of her hair to re-use it.  They can break the hair or hurt her head.  Snip it with a tiny pair of scissors and use a new one each time.

My little girl pulls the clip right out of her hair as soon as I put it in.  Any suggestions?

It's best to start babies wearing bows as early as possible so that they will get used to them.  If it's too late for that, you may have to wait until she's old enough to understand how cute she looks in her bow!  Try helping her put bows in her baby dolls' hair and see if that gets her interested.  Also try the tip above using a small clear rubber band which makes it harder to pull the clip out.

What are your different types of clips?

Alligator clips, also known as pinch clips, are the most versatile clip.  Use them to pull hair to the side, to pull back wisps of hair or bangs that are growing out, and to clip above the rubber band for pigtails or ponytails.  All of our bows are available on the alligator clip.  Metro Clips and Cutie Clippies are covered alligator clips.

French clips work best for thick hair.  We use 2.25" french clips for bows, and 1.5" clips for ponytail streamers.

Black metal-free Pony O rubber bands are used for ponytail streamers as well.
